Why Get Acupuncture?  Part 1 - Treatment of Symptoms

Michael Savalli • Jan 10, 2024

Most people come for acupuncture because they need help with a health issue.  They have heard of, or experienced its ability to heal and provide relief, and that is the primary benefit they are looking for.

By and far most people we see in clinics are seeking some kind of relief from pain.  This is great because acupuncture excels at pain relief, and has minimal side-effects.  We like to say, acupuncture boosts the bodies natural healing and pain relief abilities.  It improves circulation, and

What Kinds of Conditions does it Treat?

The most common conditions we see are for low back pain, neck pain, joint pain, etc.  (Likely because so many people have these issues.) That also includes arthritis, or chronic long term conditions, and acute or sudden injuries.  How long the relief lasts depends on the severity of the condition.  Mild to moderate conditions are often significantly improved.

Other conditions we can treat by balancing the body includes: stress related disorders. digestive problems, sleep, mood, fertility, regulated periods, menopausal symptoms, common cold and flu, neuropathic pain, high blood pressure, urinary pain and infection, recovery from surgery, and supporting and reducing side-effects of cancer treatments.

What a Treatment Looks Like

We start with a brief examination and health history.  This helps us determine the pattern of the illness.  It helps to have a medical diagnosis, but it is not necessary for a treatment. The exam is non-invasive, and with Community Acupuncture there is no need to disrobe.  It consists mainly of some questions and tongue and pulse examination.  From here we determine which points to use.  In Community Acupuncture we focus on points of the arms, legs and ears.  Anywhere from 2-20 points being common.  Sometimes, less points are more effective.

Once the points are in place, you are encouraged to relax and rest for 30 minutes or so, and enjoy the soft music.  At the end we remove the needles (which are very, very thin, and not painful.  If you do experience needle pain, we’ll fix that right away).

This usually goes on once or twice a week in the beginning.  With progress we will need to see you less often.  Gradually reducing treatment frequency with improving symptoms.  From here some people chose a maintenance schedule, or you could come back as needed, it’s up to you.  That’s all there is to it!

We practice in Commack, NY.
